J.M.W. Turner: Burning of the Houses of Parliament (1834)

Just a short thought. Every night as I lay in bed getting ready for sleep I look at this painting (print) hanging on my wall. It’s one of Turner’s lesser known pieces, but one of my favorites. Despite the chaotic subject of the painting, I find it quite calming.

On one level I enjoy the aesthetics of the work, however at a far deeper level I marvel at the patience, discipline, and commitment of the artist. Painting at age 59 it must have taken Turner months or even years to paint this single work – and an entire lifetime to master the elegance and precision of his art. One question for tonight: Does this kind of patience and discipline exist in a digital age?
